~ Dr. David Fairbanks to guide Department's program areas ~

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Department of Children and Families Secretary Bob Butterworth today named David Fairbanks the new Acting Assistant Secretary of Department Programs effective March 28, 2007. Fairbanks will oversee the Department's program offices including the offices of Family Safety, Refugee Services, Homelessness, Child Care, Adult Protective Services, and the Department's economic self-sufficiency program, ACCESS Florida.

"David is a strong leader with a proven track record of success here at the Department," said Butterworth. "I'm confident he'll guide our programs in the right direction, increasing accountability and transparency in the services we offer further helping the children and families of Florida."

Most recently serving as the Director of Provider Relations, Fairbanks provided direction and technical assistance to state and local leaders as they implemented community-based care, Florida's landmark initiative to strengthen community and private sector engagement in the service of Children and Families. Fairbanks also played an integral role in coordinating the Department's Sheriff Protective Investigations initiative, strengthening the partnership between the Department's protective services and law enforcement investigations.

In addition, he has consulted in many other states and at the federal level, having brought a federal Department of Education grant to Leon County Schools during his tenure as Shared Service Network Project Manager. He also established and served as principal of the first school in Tallahassee for students with serious mental health needs. As Chief of Children's Mental Health at the Department, Fairbanks guided the passage of major reforms to the Children's Mental Health Act.

Fairbanks earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Eastern Michigan University and continued his education at Florida State University earning both a master's and doctorate degree in psychology. Fairbanks currently resides in Tallahassee, Fla.
