DCF Contact: Paige Patterson-Hughes, (954) 375-3354

Sunrise, FL - The Department of Children and Families (DCF), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will administer the federal DSNAP program, Food for Florida, in Broward County from November 7, 2017 through November 9, 2017 to assist individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Irma. The program will be held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. Broward residents are encouraged to attend this location for assistance.  This site will accept vehicle traffic only.

To qualify for the Food for Florida Disaster Food Assistance program, applicants must have lived or worked in one of the counties declared for FEMA Individual Assistance on September 5, and not be receiving food assistance through the regular Food Assistance Program (SNAP). Additionally, eligible individuals and families must have suffered a disaster-related loss, such as damage to their homes or self-employment property, loss of food, reduction or loss of income, or have incurred other disaster related expenses. The program counts only income and expenses from September 5 through October 4, 2017.

Individuals are encouraged to fill out the initial application for assistance online before visiting the Food for Florida site. The application is available on the Food for Florida website.

DCF has worked closely with management at the BB&T Center as well as the Sunrise Police Department to ensure safe and efficient operations. Per venue management, bags, purses or personal items larger than 12 by 12 inches, backpacks, coolers, umbrellas, and chairs are not permitted in the exterior line or inside of the BB&T Center building. Public safety is DCF’s first priority and this policy will be strictly enforced on-site.

As the temperature inside of BB&T Center is regulated to maintain NHL ice, please be prepared for colder temperatures inside of the center.

DCF will continue to follow the direction of law enforcement and the BB&T Center security to ensure the safety of those we are committed to serving. DCF defers to local law enforcement for all determinations related to traffic or public safety issues. DCF has aggressively pursued actions to ensure operations are as expeditious, safe, and efficient as possible.

Please note BB&T Center’s bag and personal item policy will be in effect for each day of this event. There will be two special needs application processing areas inside of the BB&T Center on the main entry level for applicants with special needs.  Please be prepared for colder temperatures inside of the center.  In addition, golf cart drivers near the center’s handicap permit/placard parking areas will be offering transportation for persons with special needs to and from the center’s handicap parking areas to the entrance.
